Few drivers, however, managed significant mileage due to the forecast rain interrupting the session. <br /> <br />With the circuit wet most of the time, intermediate tyres meant lap times were significantly slower than over the previous three days. Jarno Trulli, Toyota, 1:32.150</span></td> </tr> </table></td> </tr> <tr> <td colspan="2" height="1" class="spaceRow"><img src="templates/Acid/images/spacer.gif" alt="" width="1" height="1" /></td> </tr> <tr> <td width="22%" align="left" valign="top" class="row2"><span class="name"><a name=""></a><b>crazycaz</b></span></td> <td class="row2" height="28" valign="top"><table width="100%" border="0" cellspacing="0" cellpadding="0"> <tr> <td width="100%"><img src="templates/Acid/images/icon_minipost.gif" width="12" height="9" alt="Post" title="Post" border="0" /><span class="postdetails">Posted: Thu Apr 17, 2008 5:37 am<span class="gen"> </span> Post subject: </span></td> </tr> <tr> <td colspan="2"><hr /></td> </tr> <tr> <td colspan="2"><span class="postbody">Alonso outpaces old rival Schu <br />Wednesday, 16 April 2008 19:17 <br /> <br />Renault’s Fernando Alonso outpaced old rival Michael Schumacher in the battle of the slick tyre runners on day three of the Barcelona test. <br /> <br /> <br />The world champions led the field as teams once again split their track time between preparations for next weekend’s Spanish GP and further simulations of 2009-spec conditions. <br /> <br /> <br />Alonso has shown encouraging pace in his two days in the heavily upgraded R28 and after focusing on set-up work in the morning, set the day’s benchmark effort of 1m18.483s on his very first run on slicks just before lunch. <br /> <br /> <br />“The day has been good and I was happy with the developments to the car,” he said. <br /> <br /> <br /> <br /> <br />“But we still need to keep improving because it seems that our competitors have also improved and so it is still difficult to say how we really compare with them. <br /> <br /> <br />“We have to wait until next week to get a full picture of where we stand.” <br /> <br /> <br />And on his view of driving on slicks, he added: “It was fun to try the slick tyres, which gave very good grip." <br /> <br /> <br />Meanwhile Schumacher’s latest return saw the retired legend drive a slick-shod F2008, modified to run with projected levels of aerodynamic downforce for next year. <br /> <br /> <br />The 39-year-old completed 83 laps and ended the day over 0.8s behind Alonso. <br /> <br /> <br />Fellow German Adrian Sutil followed up his Force India team-mate Giancarlo Fisichella’s day two exploits to slot in just behind Schumacher in third. <br /> <br /> <br />And as was the case with his stable-mate on Tuesday, Sutil set his best lap on slick tyres while his VJM01 car was running in its current aerodynamic configuration. <br /> <br /> <br />BMW’s Robert Kubica completed the most laps of anyone during the session (112) – but his day ended an hour early after he went off a turn five due to a technical problem with his F1.08. <br /> <br /> <br />The team says the small impact with a barrier caused some damage to the car’s front suspension and front wing and it will analyse the reason for the crash overnight. <br /> <br /> <br />Fifth fastest was Nico Rosberg who also encountered a mechanical glitch on his Williams, although he still managed to complete the team’s planned programme on grooved rubber. <br /> <br /> <br />Day two pacesetter Rubens Barrichello completed another solid day for Honda in sixth, ahead of Lewis Hamilton’s McLaren as both stayed on the grooves. <br /> <br /> <br />Toro Rosso gave its new STR3 its first track outing on Wednesday, but the team will complete no more running in it this week after Sebastien Bourdais crashed heavily in it at turn nine. <br /> <br /> <br />The Frenchman walked away unscathed and the team has announced that such was the damage caused to the car it has been forced to cancel its Thursday running. <br /> <br /> <br /> <br /> <br />Red Bull's Mark Webber and Toyota's Jarno Trulli were ninth and tenth respectively after both focusing on Spanish GP set-up work. <br /> <br /> <br /> <br /> <br />All teams, except Force India and STR, will continue on at Barcelona into a fourth day, although rain is forecast to hamper Thursday's running. <br /> <br /> <br />Testing times from Barcelona (April 16) <br /> <br /> <br /> <br /> <br />1. This makes meaningful study of the lap times from the next four days almost impossible as there are no set times for running next year’s rubber. <br /> <br /> <br />David Coulthard was at the wheel for us today: in the morning he concentrated on general chassis and aerodynamic work and in the afternoon he evaluated the slick tyres. <br /> <br />Coulthard was sixth fastest of the nine on track, with a best lap of 1:22.193s over 59 laps.
