Renault to land Kimi, retain Flavio

GMMf1NET -- 15/07/2006 9:21am

Renault will shortly distribute a joint press release confirming the extension of Flavio Briatore's contract and a sensational deal to snatch Kimi Raikkonen from the clutches of both Ferrari and McLaren.

The Finn's manager, Steve Robertson, spent twenty minutes - from 3.20pm to 3.50pm - in the Renault motor home at Magny Cours on Friday, as he met with Briatore.

26-year-old Raikkonen's almost certain agreement to race for the blue and yellow team in 2007 follows renewed paddock speculation that Michael Schumacher will definitely race beyond '06.

Kimi's camp was having none of the latest paddock whispering, however, with Robertson's father - David - telling the Guardian: ''There is no ink dry on any contract for Kimi and any team anywhere for next year.

''There is not even one written in pencil.''

Briatore, meanwhile, is understood to have now informed carmaker Renault's upper management that he will continue to lead the Enstone based team, but only for one more season.

More about Kimi maybe going to Renault.

I love that report, the reporter can't do his maths I guess 3.20-3.50 is half an hour!! As if it matters what time anyway!!

I think people are realising that with the relative success of Ferrari this year MS wants to stay on for a bit longer, so there is no point waiting for an announcement, so they might as well get on with sorting out next season!

This story rolls on..

Renault boss wants Raikkonen
18 July 2006
For months everyone has been speculating over where Kimi Raikkonen will race in 2007. The Finnish driver has endured a difficult season at McLaren and his current contract expires at the end of the season.

Fernando Alonso will join McLaren next season from Renault, but the Woking-based team has not clarified who will be his team mate. Latest reports are suggesting that Alonso could do a switch with Raikkonen. Renault has now revealed Raikkonen is an interesting option for them for next season.

"It is not a secret that we are talking with Raikkonen, he is a priority to us. If we could come to an agreement we would be very satisfied because we would have signed one of the greatest drivers at the moment and apart from that he is still very young," Renault president Alain Dassas told the French media during a lunch.

Speaking about Renault's current Finn, Heikki Kovalainen, Dassas said about his option to race at Renault next season: "To have a driver without experience like him would be a risk. In the current Formula 1 series you need fast results and that can be a problem for a newcomer."

I have also read reports that Renault are willing to pay Ferrari 4.4million to buy Kimi out of a pre-season contract that he has already signed!!

This is getting really silly!!

Schumi-Kimi match-up moves closer
Wednesday, 02, August, 2006, 12:03

Michael Schumacher and Kimi Raikkonen will race head-to-head as Ferrari team-mates next year, according to a report in this week’s Autocar.

The Maranello squad’s line-up has been the biggest talking point of the ‘silly season’ and is the key to the 2007 driver market.

A Schumacher-Raikkonen match-up has been mooted for months, but is contingent both on Schumacher choosing to prolong his Formula 1 career and Raikkonen moving from McLaren to Ferrari.

Both of these scenarios now look increasingly likely.

The word in the Hockenheim paddock last weekend was that Renault’s overtures to Raikkonen have failed and the Finn will head to the Scuderia after all.

Raikkonen’s Ferrari deal has been in the offing for a long time, with persistent rumours – denied by his management – that he has already signed a pre-contract agreement with the team.

And although Renault has made a concerted bid for his services in recent weeks, the French manufacturer’s competitive eclipse by Ferrari is likely to have steadied any ‘wobble’ Kimi had over his decision.

Meanwhile Schumacher is revelling in Ferrari’s resurgence.

The 37-year-old showed every sign of being a man at the top of his game as he romped to his third successive win at Hockenheim and made further inroads into Fernando Alonso’s championship lead.

Ferrari’s technical director and Schumacher confidant Ross Brawn told ITV Sport last weekend that Schumacher is more motivated than ever as his quest to reclaim the title from Alonso gathers momentum – an observation echoed by the German’s manager Willi Weber.

There is therefore now a strong expectation that Schumacher will defer his retirement and re-sign with Ferrari for another year.

The team has scheduled the long-awaited announcement of its 2007 driver pairing for its home grand prix at Monza next month.

Autocar claims that Ferrari will confirm a Schumacher-Raikkonen ‘superteam’ – and that both drivers will have equal status within the team and be free to compete with each other on equal terms.

This would be a departure from Ferrari’s favoured policy over the last decade – during which time the team has been moulded around Schumacher – of having a clear lead driver and number two.
