F1 teams drop breakaway bombshell

Mosley's stance has angered the majority of F1 teams
Formula One has been thrown into chaos after the Formula One Teams Association (Fota) carried out its threat to set up a rival championship in 2010.

Eight of F1's major teams have been frustrated by deadlocked talks with world motorsport boss Max Mosley over his controversial budget cap proposals.

"The teams have declined to alter their original conditional entries to the 2010 F1 Championship," said the teams.

"We've no alternative than to commence preparation for a new championship."

Mosley was insistent on introducing a voluntary £40m budget cap for teams to curtail a "financial arms race" in F1.

But Fota refused to agree to his conditions, prompting championship leader Brawn GP, Ferrari, McLaren, Renault, Toyota, BMW Sauber, Red Bull Racing and Toro Rosso to take their drastic action.

They announced their decision following a four-hour meeting on Thursday night ahead of this weekend's British Grand Prix at Silverstone.

"Since the formation of Fota last September the teams have worked together and sought to engage the FIA and commercial rights holder (Bernie Ecclestone), to develop and improve the sport," read a Fota statement.

"Unprecedented worldwide financial turmoil has inevitably placed great challenges before the F1 community.

"Fota is proud that it has achieved the most substantial measures to reduce costs in the history of our sport.

"In particular, the manufacturer teams have provided assistance to the independent teams, a number of which would probably not be in the sport today without the Fota initiatives.

"The Fota teams have further agreed upon a substantial voluntary cost reduction that provides a sustainable model for the future.

"Following these efforts, all the teams have confirmed to the FIA and the commercial rights holder that they are willing to commit until the end of 2012.

The teams cannot continue to compromise on the fundamental values of the sport and have declined to alter their original conditional entries to the 2010 world championship

"The wishes of the majority of the teams are ignored. Furthermore, tens of millions of dollars have been withheld from many teams by the commercial rights holder, going back as far as 2006.

"Despite this, and the uncompromising environment, Fota has genuinely sought compromise.

"It has become clear, however, the teams cannot continue to compromise on the fundamental values of the sport and have declined to alter their original conditional entries to the 2010 world championship."

Fota added that its championship would put F1 fans first and boast the best drivers and sponsors.

"This series will have transparent governance, one set of regulations, encourage more entrants and listen to the wishes of the fans, including offering lower prices for spectators worldwide, partners and other important stakeholders," added the statement.

"The major drivers, stars, brands, sponsors, promoters and companies historically associated with the highest level of motorsport will all feature in this new series."

Former champions Williams and Force India have already committed unconditionally to the FIA's world championship along with three new entrants - Campos, US F1 and Manor.

The FIA has said there are other would-be newcomers waiting to take the places of those teams that refused to enter unconditionally, although one, Lola, has already withdrawn its application.

The stage is also set for a legal battle, with the FIA saying champions Ferrari and the two Red Bull teams have existing contracts which commit them to the existing championship.

The FIA had set a Friday deadline for five teams - Brawn, BMW-Sauber, McLaren, Renault and Toyota - to convert their provisional entries into unconditional ones or risk being excluded.

There was no immediate comment from the FIA or Ecclestone.

FIA responds...

Hot on the heels of the announcement that the eight Formula One Teams' Association members are to form their own breakaway series, the sport’s governing body put out a statement saying that are not surprised by the move given that both sides were unable to come to an agreement over the future of Formula One.

The FIA however firmly pins the blame on the breakdown in negotiations on the team alliance.

"The FIA is disappointed but not surprised by FOTA’s inability to reach a compromise in the best interests of the sport," the statement reads. "It is clear that elements within FOTA have sought this outcome throughout the prolonged period of negotiation and have not engaged in the discussions in good faith.

“The FIA cannot permit a financial arms race in the Championship nor can the FIA allow FOTA to dictate the rules of Formula One.

The FIA confirmed that the deadline for unconditional entries into the FIA Formula One World Championship remain unchanged with entries to be submitted by this evening and that the entry list will be published on Saturday.

As it stands, the FIA championship – minus the eight FOTA members – will feature Williams, Force India, Manor, US F1 and Campos teams. Lola has already withdrawn its entry while the likes of Prodrive, Brabham and March may be called up to help fill the field.

FOTA teams deliver damning statement
Friday 19th June 2009

In their shock announcement that they will form their own breakaway series from F1, the FOTA teams delivered a strongly-worded statement that pointed accusing fingers at the FIA and F1 supremo Bernie Ecclestone.

"Since the formation of FOTA last September the teams have worked together and sought to engage the FIA and commercial rights holder [Ecclestone], to develop and improve the sport," read the statement.

"The FIA and the commercial rights holder have campaigned to divide FOTA.

"The wishes of the majority of the teams are ignored. Furthermore, tens of millions of dollars have been withheld from many teams by the commercial rights holder, going back as far as 2006.

"Despite this, and the uncompromising environment, FOTA has genuinely sought compromise.

"It has become clear, however, the teams cannot continue to compromise on the fundamental values of the sport and have declined to alter their original conditional entries to the 2010 world championship.

"These teams, therefore, have no alternative other than to commence the preparation for a new championship which reflects the values of its participants and partners.

"This series will have transparent governance, one set of regulations, encourage more entrants and listen to the wishes of the fans, including offering lower prices for spectators worldwide, partners and other important stakeholders.

"The major drivers, stars, brands, sponsors, promoters and companies historically associated with the highest level of motorsport will all feature in this new series."

That last statement... I'm well up for..
Its about time really.. we are sick of the things that have put the sport in retribute over the past ten years, mostly because of The FIA & The FOM, who primarily have made the ticket cost so high around the world. lets be honest £249 on average for a seated ticket is not acceptable, especially considering when the venue and circuit only recieve roughly 18% of the ticket cost.

I t would be a historical moment when the teams of F1 (the majority) pull out and create a new championship and succeed better than the remaining F1 championship.
I think IF it actually happens (we all have our doubts) most supporters would also join into the new championship, I know i would be another one of those..

Max is living in cloud cookoo land if he thinks FOTA are going to back down...

The Formula One Teams Association (FOTA) has said that, contrary to popular belief, it is not close to finding a compromise with governing body the FIA over next year's World Championship. Having announced a breakaway series on Friday, the eight teams in question have now said that plans for the new championship are continuing to go ahead.

With no agreement being found amid the two parties and F1 looking to lose eight of its current ten teams, varied rumours around the Silverstone paddock include those that governing body the FIA, headed by Max Mosley, is involved in compromise talks with FOTA members, after teams met one-by-one with Mosley at Silverstone.

A fan shows her support for FOTA at the British Grand Prix
"Now is enough," FOTA vice chairman John Howett told Autosport. "We have made our statement and this is very clear. That is it. We will have it ready in the next few weeks, we have been planning for several weeks already. We want a Formula One championship organised by FOTA, there has been no change in the last two days. I do not want to make anymore statements." Howett, of Toyota, also stressed that FOTA has received 'overwhelming support' from the public.

"I think, obviously, we have to see what happens in the coming few weeks but I think it is not a situation that we set out to achieve," continued McLaren's Martin Whitmarsh, head of FOTA's working group for sporting regulations. "We have got to make sure that we concentrate on keeping all of the teams together and making sure that we are racing together in the premier form of motor racing.

"FOTA has a number of meetings next week and we've got to look at the process by which we appoint people who are selling the media, such as looking at the way in which we engage circuits. There has been a lot of interest in working with us, and given our situation we are obliged to go forward with those arrangements and that planning."
