Michael Schumacher has apologised for ruining Fernando Alonso’s final qualifying lap in Monaco on Saturday – but resolutely maintains that he did not do so on purpose.

Schumacher was sent to the back of the grid after race stewards determined that he had deliberately staged an incident at the end of the top-10 shootout to protect his pole-winning time.

The German said after Sunday’s race that he regretted the fact that Alonso’s lap had been compromised, whilst again dismissing suggestions of foul play.

“I can only apologise that it happened, but it was not my intention,” Schumacher was quoted as saying by autosport.com.

“I did not know where Alonso was at this point – I did not have radio contact to say exactly where he was.”

Schumacher admitted that the incident looked “quite strange from the outside” but insisted there was a genuine explanation for it.

And he said those who had rushed to condemn him were not in a position to judge his actions objectively.

“To a certain point I am used to living with criticism, but nobody else but me was sitting inside the car, and without all the information which we had and in terms of what feeling I had in the car you cannot make a proper judgement,” he said.

“But I have to admit that some of it looks quite strange from the outside.

“But there are reasons for all of this. For those who are thinking I tried to destroy Fernando's lap on purpose, I have to disappoint them.”

Schumacher’s pleas of innocence were met with derision by a number of his fellow drivers, including Jacques Villeneuve, Juan Pablo Montoya, Kimi Raikkonen and Jarno Trulli.

But the seven-time world champion played down criticism from his peers, saying much of it came from the usual suspects who had an axe to grind.

“There are some who speak to the press and don’t speak to me, and there are others who don’t go to the press and do speak to me,” he said.

“That is life. You cannot always have friends, you also have rivals and people who don’t get on with you very well.

“Why should that be different in F1 [from] in normal life?”

And, alluding to previous controversial incidents with Villeneuve and Damon Hill, Schumacher said: “I have learnt very often that the past does get turned up.

“But I think everybody has black dots on their white jacket.

“I have been in F1 for 15 or 16 years and I think I can say there are not too many black dots on my jacket.

“In a way, I can live with it that people argue about these black dots.”

Well this is really going to turn into a controversial thread!

I tend to agree with the ITV commentators on this - that im sure Schumacher's actions were not premeditated, he probably made a split-second decision and regreted it afterwards.

That doesnt mean that I approve of his actions. It isnt the first time that Schumacher has been seen as 'affecting' other peoples racing in the past when he felt threatened, so this could be a repeat of that. And if he didnt park the car in Monaco with intent to block others then why did he do it at all? He could have made the corner, both Martin Brundle and Jackie Stewart agreed on that, so why did he just stop it there?!

Th stewards decided that he had 'cheated' so we have to agree with them i guess. Hes just setting such a bad example to the new generation of drivers.

David would never do somthing like that! And thankfully DC finished ahead of him yesterday!! Smile

No I don't think that MS thought about doing this beforehand, it was definately an opportunity grabbed at the time, just like a lot of things that MS has done in the past, he didn't think about the consequences until it was too late!!

However it isn't the way that he would wish to end his F1 career!!

Respect to your opinion Selo. its not meant to be controversial only just gauge peoples thoughts on it.. At first (when he did it) i was thinking oh well shame spoiled the quali..
BUT
you can clearly see that he made two hard turns to the left then corrected the wheels straight without no attempt to move. thats the facts that the FIA saw too. he cant really argue about needing to reverse .as he didnt really need to. Shame as he didnt really have to do anything like this in the first place since he is one of the very best drivers still.
Looking back it makes you wonder though if he is losing the edge a little..... if he even had a second thought to act out the opportunity to park the car in the first place means he cant be so sure of himself anymore? Smile

Have said in another thread, desperate times cause for desperate measures. MS quick decisions always turn out to be the wrong one and have always affected other drivers/people around him. He's had his time, he's had a great career and he's a 7 times champ, theres no need to make these silly attempts to spoil things for the current drivers. He should have gone after '05 on a high.

I think that it was a last minute decision that was totaly carzy. He really doesn't think when he makes these split second decisions. Well, he can't blame anyone else.
